NINE-FOOT  BRONZE  LIKENESS
OF WELL-LOVED SUPERSTAR
PRESENTED  TO THE CITY

Brooks chokes-up accepting honor

By Alan Z. Forman

A nine-foot-tall black athlete wearing a golden glove now holds court in downtown Baltimore across the street from Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Not a basketball player nor even an African-American, but a baseball-playing idol from a period of Baltimore innocence immortalized in bronze, that now dominates the square between Russell Street and Washington Boulevard adjacent to MLB’s most unique “retro stadium,” less than three football fields’ distance from the statue of a young Babe Ruth that greets fans attending Oriole games each season.

It is Brooks Robinson, arguably the most beloved athlete in Baltimore, described by Gov. Martin O’Malley at his statue’s unveiling as “the best third baseman ever to play the game of baseball.”

Not everyone agrees 100 percent with that assessment, but those folks don’t live in Baltimore. However everyone connected in any way with baseball does acknowledge that Robinson is the greatest defensive third baseman ever, and one of the greatest glove men all-around in the history of the sport.

His statue wears a gold glove to commemorate the 16 consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards he won during his 23-year playing career with the Orioles at the former Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street. Robinson never played at Camden Yards, which opened 15 years after his retirement.

On Saturday, in accepting his fans’ and adopted city’s offering, Robinson did something that never happened to him on the playing field — he choked up.

Orioles legendary third baseman Brooks Calbert Robinson Jr. stands beside his newly unveiled statue, next to artist Joseph Sheppard (wearing hat). At far right is Robinson’s wife Connie.

As tears streamed down his face, he told more than 1,000 adoring fans who gathered at what is now named Brooks Robinson Plaza that he never expected “to have a statue,” let alone a likeness “300 yards from a statue of the greatest player in major league history, Babe Ruth; and another three or 400 yards [away] is the statue of the greatest quarterback in NFL history, No. 19 Johnny Unitas, a dear friend of mine who I miss very much.”

Unitas, the icon of the former Baltimore Colts, died in 2002 at age 69.

Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983 with a 92 percent vote in his first year of eligibility, the man known variously as “Mr. Oriole” and “The Human Vacuum Cleaner” — because he “cleaned up” every ball that ever came near third base on 33rd Street — attracted the largest crowd for a Hall of Fame ceremony at the time of his voting-in, according to Jeffrey L. Idelson, president of the hall and museum at Cooperstown N.Y.

Idelson described Robinson as “a man whose legacy and accomplishments stand taller than most,” a sentiment that virtually everyone agrees with: He is almost universally considered to be as great a human being as he is a baseball legend.

However not by the current Orioles owner and top-level management, who boycotted the ceremony amid charges that team president Peter G. Angelos, who is reputed to not like the third-base icon, did not want the statue to be erected.

The Orioles did not participate in negotiations for the honor, but officially the team’s front office issued a statement declaring support and indicating that it was expected Robinson would be part of a 20-year anniversary celebration for the Camden Yards facility planned to take place in 2012.

Wearing Brooks’ No. 5 team jersey, Chris Borth, 40, with four-year-old daughter Carolina, was Robinson’s youngest fan in 1975, when Chris was Carolina’s age.

“We absolutely love Brooks,” said Orioles Director of Public Relations Monica Barlow, according to the Baltimore Sun, adding: “There aren’t enough ways to honor this great man.”

Other dignitaries on the dais Saturday included Maryland’s senior United States Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, who told the crowd, “It’s not just about the golden gloves, it’s about the golden heart that Brooks has.

“He’s from a time when we knew our baseball players…, but most important…, they knew us.”

Other speakers included Emmy-nominated actor Josh Charles, of TV’s “The Good Wife” and “In Treatment,” a lifelong Orioles fan, who said, “They don’t make guys like Brooks anymore”; and mayoral aide Kevin D. Cleary, acting director of the city’s Office of Neighborhoods, who represented Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who was unable to attend the ceremony because of a conflicting personal commitment.

Standing in the audience was City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young, who was neither asked to speak nor offered a seat on the dais with the other dignitaries, including Baltimore County Executive Kevin B. Kamenetz, who told Voice of Baltimore, “Brooks lives in my ‘district.’”

Referring to Robinson’s uniform number, 5, Kamenetz said, “He’s No. 5 but in Baltimore County he’s No. 1 among our residents, a very humble man. It’s been an honor to share this day with him.”

Cal Ripken Jr. also lives in Baltimore County. Ripken, who sent a letter that was read to the audience Saturday, indicated he was unable to attend because of family commitments.

A letter from fellow third-base Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, who played his entire career for the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League, was also read aloud.

Two of many fans in attendance Saturday wear Brooks Rob- inson’s No. 5 Orioles jersey as others photograph unveiling of iconic statue adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Robinson and Ripken both played their entire career for the Orioles. In current times it is highly unusual for players to remain for the duration with one team.

A native of Little Rock, Ark., Robinson, 74, was signed by the Orioles, he said, the day he graduated from high school at age 18. He has lived in Baltimore with Connie, his wife of 51 years, ever since.

City Councilman Carl Stokes (D-12th) was also in the audience, standing next to Council President Young. Channel 2 sportscaster Scott Garceau served as master of ceremonies for the event.

The statue is the result of a seven-year effort begun in 2004 by Baltimore businessman Henry A. Rosenberg Jr. who, with his wife, Dorothy, put up the lion’s share of its $400,000 cost plus another $100,000 for the city-owned piazza (plaza) where it stands, one-third of which came from public donations.

In the off-seasons during the last 10 years of his playing career and in the years following his retirement from baseball, Robinson acted as spokesman for one of Rosenberg’s companies, Crown Central Petroleum, of which Rosenberg was CEO.

Conflicting reports seemed to put the total expenditure for the statue, its piazza and pedestal, at $700,000; however Baltimore native and world-renowned artist Joseph Sheppard, who created the statue at his studio in Pietrasanta, in Tuscany, near Florence and Pisa, Italy, told VoB, “If that’s true, I don’t know where the other $200,000 went.”

Big-screen video feed shows Brooks Robinson, seated next to wife Connie (wearing hat), as actor Josh Charles addresses estimated crowd of 1,000 cheering fans. Gov. Martin O’Malley is at far left on dais. Robinson won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards in 23 years with Orioles, playing entire career at Memorial Stadium on 33rd St.

Sheppard’s statue is positioned in the plaza with Robinson, ball in hand, about to throw out a runner at first base — and is directly in line with the actual location of first and third base inside the stadium at Camden Yards.

Sheppard taught at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore for 15 years; he also created the Holocaust monument on Lombard Street.

Referring to Michelangelo, he told the crowd: “Florence has their [statue of] David, now Baltimore has its Brooks.”

Oriole Park at Camden Yards is a so-called “retro” ballpark featuring fan-friendly design that is more often found in minor league cities than MLB (Major League Baseball) towns like Baltimore. It opened in 1992.

Its incorporation of the old Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad warehouse directly adjacent to the stadium is considered an artistic achievement unmatched by any other sports venue in the world.

Said Columnist Michael Olesker, who wrote frequently back in the day about Robinson: “Brooks represents the Baltimore of an era when sports had its innocence.

“He doesn’t just represent the best of baseball, but the best of human beings.”

A PERSONAL REMINISCENCE FROM VOICE OF BALTIMORE:

In the mid-1970s an Orioles fan who idolized Brooks Robinson was about to celebrate her 100th birthday and the residents of her apartment building planned a large party for her. Several months prior to the event they contacted the Orioles’ front office and asked if they could purchase a large wall-size photograph of Brooks to present to her as a birthday present.

After some negotiating the Orioles agreed to make the photo available but then dawdled on its production, and as late as a week before the party still had not produced it. Despite complaints from the residents, the day of the party arrived and still no photograph from the Orioles.

At the party, as the embarrassed residents apologized to the woman for being unable to obtain the present in time for the birthday celebration — in walked Brooks Robinson himself and presented the gift to his adoring fan, then stayed for nearly an hour chatting with the very senior citizen, who he had never met before.

On Saturday outside Camden Yards this humble icon told more than a thousand people who came to honor him: “I have never considered you ‘fans’; I’ve always considered you my friends, more than anything else.

“And I thank you so much for the way you’ve treated me over these many years. Thank you very much.”

He then pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped the tears from his face.

Fans crowd newly named Brooks Robinson Plaza outside Camden Yards Saturday to honor Orioles icon who played entire baseball career in Baltimore from 1955-1977. Nine-foot statue by Maryland artist Joseph Sheppard, a former MICA professor, depicts the well-loved highly respected Robinson standing on third base about to throw to first, and is in line with actual location of the bases inside the ballpark.
